An idyllic French hideaway on the banks of the Dordogne river, Bergerac is surrounded by postcard-pretty villages and châteaux. It’s rightly famed for heavenly vineyards, flower-filled hills and first-class food.

Getting Around

Things To Do

For wine fans

The best of Bergerac wines can be found at Maison des Vins, in a former 17th-century monastery. Be sure to try locally produced appellation d'origine contrôlée (controlled designation of origin) wines. Or if you have a car, visit one of the 900 or so vineyards that frame the town.

Explore on water

From Bergerac’s location on the Dordogne, you can cruise in a traditional barge to enjoy the history, flora and fauna of this UNESCO Biosphere Reserve. Or navigate the river in a canoe if you’re feeling adventurous.

For culture lovers

Bergerac is part of the Villes d’Art et d’Histoire (artistic and historic towns) national network honouring French locales which look after their architectural, natural and industrial heritage. Dig into local history at the Musée du Tabac (tobacco museum) or Musée Costi (for swoon-worthy Greek sculpture).

Food and Drink

Bergerac’s excellent restaurants make good use of local specialities such as truffles, goats’ cheese, walnuts and foie gras. You’ll be spoilt for choice at mealtimes.
